Beer Run Valentine’s Day Wine Tasting

Merryvale Starmont Chardonnay 2007 Napa Valley

Grown in their favorite Chardonnay vineyards in the Napa Valley, the fruit is carefully hand sorted and whole cluster pressed to preserve the fresh fruit character. The juice was 50% tank fermented and 50% barrel fermented. Wine Enthusiast gives this 91 points and says: “Oak barrel aging provides sweet wood tannins and lush notes of vanilla and crème brûlée, but the real star of this wine is the fruit. It tastes of pineapples, mandarin oranges, green apples, kiwis, limes and Asian pears. Delicious and mouth-filling, and a bargain at this price.”

Cupid’s Arrow Pinot Noir 2008 Central Otago

Dense ruby red in color this Pinot Noir has red berry and black cherry fruits mixed with the wild herb and floral characters. A soft textured palate with fine grainy tannins and a spicy, dried fruit character on the finish. Wine Spectator gives it 89 points and says: “Bright, with a dark cast to the fruit and spice that burrows through a light layer of tannins and expands on the finish. Focused and refined. Drink now through 2015. 5,000 cases imported.”

Murphy-Goode Merlot 2007 Alexander Valley

Murphy Goode achieves considerable complexity of aroma and depth of flavor in this Alexander Valley Merlot through selection from several different vineyard sources. The steep hillside estates of Murphy Ranch and Robert Young Vineyards, in the heart of Alexander Valley provide the wine’s core of black fruit components, while vineyards on the bench-land in the southern part of the Alexander Valley add spice and further complexity.

Terra d’Oro Syrah 2005 Amador County

Terra d’Oro 2005 Syrah is a study in elegance. The aromatic silhouette of grape and fig aromas is swathed in violets, rosewater and citrus zest. Blackberry and black currant flavors are generously spiced with sandalwood and white pepper. The mouthfeel is supple but with a firmness to the finish appropriate for such intensity of flavor.

Acre Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Central Coast

California’s Central Coast is big – 95,000 vine acres big – that’s twice the size of Napa Valley. The AVA sprawls from Monterey to Santa Barbara, so you can imagine the diversity of soils, aspects and micro-climates. This 2007 Cabernet comes mostly from Paso Robles, accented by small amounts of Merlot and Petite Sirah from Monterey County’s Hames Valley. 2007 was an excellent vintage across the state and it comes through in this wine, which is deep crimson with dark cherry and currant aromas and flavors. Dusty cocoa powder, espresso and black fruit flavors linger on the finish with supple tannins.

Banfi Rosa Regale 2009

Rosa Regale Brachetto d’Acqui is a unique red sparkling wine. Sweet and appealing, Brachetto may be enjoyed as a delicious aperitif, between-meal or after-dinner sparkler.

Aromatic with a hint of rose petals and raspberries, “Rosa Regale” Brachetto d’Acqui is perhaps the only wine in the world that marries well with chocolate, especially dark or bittersweet. Perfect for Valentine’s Day.
