GREAT WINES FOR GRADUATION GIFTS AND PARTIES!!!

Starmont Merryvale Chardonnay Napa 2007 $16.49
WINEMAKER’S NOTES
The 2007 vintage was one of the best in recent memory. Merryvale Starmont Chardonnay has been a restaurant staple for years, but we think this wine took a big step up in the great 2007 vintage. Food friendly elegance and varietal nuance are the hallmarks of our 2007 Starmont Chardonnay.
91 points-Wine Enthusiast Magazine
The oak, tropical fruit, and solid acidity are extremely well balanced, giving both great richness and a nice, fresh, finish. Perfect to sip alone or with rich seafood or poultry dishes. Oak barrel aging provides sweet wood tannins and lush notes of vanilla and Creme Brulee, but the real star of this wine is the fruit. It tastes of pineapples, mandarin oranges, green apples, kiwis, limes and Asian pears. The wine is round on the palate with a long, easy finish.
Grown in our favorite Chardonnay vineyards in the Napa Valley, the fruit is carefully hand sorted and whole cluster pressed to preserve the fresh fruit character. The juice was 50% tank fermented and 50% barrel fermented. We aged the wine for 8 months ‘sur lie’ in French Oak. This light oak treatment gives a round mouth feel and improved complexity, while highlighting the fruit driven focus of the wine. A bargain at this price!

Volker Eisele Estate Terezzo Napa Valley 2005 *$37
Organic: All fruit is organically grown in our estate vineyard.
Production: 425 cases
Equal proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot showcase the vineyard strengths. The wine is barrel aged in 70% new French oak to provide the desired aromas of sweet vanilla and pungent toasted oak. The flavors are soft and fruity.
93 points- Wine Enthusiast Magazine
“Blended in equal parts of Merlot and the two Cabernets, and made with 70% new French oak, it’s all blackberries, cherries, violets, minerals, sweet cedarwood and vanilla spice. Quite a fine wine whose softly complex tannins will enable it to age.” Cellar Selection *Usually retails for $85 ON SALE for $37

Fuente Milano 2008 $9.99
Winery: Bodegas Pedro Escudero
Region: Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon
Grapes: 50% Viura, 50% Verdejo
Recommended 87 points Wine Advocate issue 181 February ‘09“Light, bright yellow with aromas of grapefruit, green apple and lemon pith. Vibrant and pure, offering zesty citrus flavors and a suave undercurrent of succulent herbs. A note of anise adds complexity to the spicy, persistent finish. Reminds me of plenty of sauvi¬gnon blancs that sell for twice the price.”88 points International Wine Cellar issue 145 June ‘09

Bodegas Muga Rosado 2009 Rioja, Spain $11.99
In appearance the wine has salmon pink shades with very bright rose pink iridescence which make it an unusual and extremely attractive wine. Its aroma is enveloping and intense throughout, with a predominance of fresh fruit- citrus, pineapple, kiwi with a strong tendency towards sweet, ripe apple and quince. On the palate, evidence of the Garnacha balanced by Viura so as to create a beautiful mosaic of fruit flavors. It is a very serious wine, a Rosé wine with a bit of punch. Traces of the lingering carbonic acid give it the typical refreshing character. The finish is long and honeyed, with an elegant and lingering touch of acidity. Press for 2008: According to Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, Jun 09: “Bright pink. A complex bouquet displays scents of red berries, cherry, dried flowers, anise and baking spices. Pliant, silky red berry flavors display good depth and gentle sweetness, with a late note of fennel adding complexity. Finishes with good juicy persistence and lingering minerality. Dry enough to work by itself but has the power to handle richer, grilled foods.” According to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2008 Muga Rose is a blend of Garnacha, Viura, and Tempranillo. Light pink in color, it offers up aromas and flavors of strawberry and rhubarb. Crisp and tasty in the mouth, it has a fruity, refreshing finish. Drink it over the next 12-18 months.”

1999 Luna Beberide Tinto Castilla y Leon $21.99
This is an incredibly rare, fully mature, Spanish gem. Produced from the steep, slate, terraced vineyards of Bierzo by Spain’s legendary Mariano Garcia (while he was still making wine at Vega Sicilia!), here is a beautiful example of a perfectly aged Spanish wine that has developed quite beautifully in bottle. Produced from 40% Cabernet, 30% Merlot and 30% Mencia, think of it as a supple, balanced, old school styled Bordeaux blend with a Castillian twist. Savory cherry, hints of sage leaf, green and black peppercorn and an unmistakable character of mature Cabernet family aromas (many people liken Mencia to Cabernet Franc, which completes this Graves style blend) make for one gorgeous bottle of wine. This wine is a delight to taste and even more importantly to drink. A wonderfully balanced combination of exotic smoky elements, bright fruit, a patina of oak and fine structure. Explosive kirsch and cassis flavors coat the palate, nuances of dark chocolate, dried herbs and more, with fine-grained tannins and gentle acidity providing spine and focus. Complete and so extremely satisfying, it should drink well for a good decade more, and Mariano Garcia made it at the same time he was busy working on Vega Sicilia “Unico,” which is a good few hundred dollars more. For fans of good, honest affordable bordeaux and old school California Cabs!

Musar Cuvée Reserve Rouge Lebanon $15.99
The vineyards of Château Musar are located at an altitude of over 3,000 feet (1,000 meters) in the Bekaa Valley where the vines are sheltered by the surrounding mountains running parallel to the Mediterranean coast. This wine is a blend of Cinsault (60%), Syrah (20%) and Cabernet-Sauvignon (20%) blended after malolactic fermentation, it has rested in concrete vats for 9 months before its bottling during the months of June and July 2009.A red ruby color with violet reflects; a nose of rich red fruits, berries, blueberries, cherries and strawberries. Very fruity on the palate where the red fruits (cherry and blueberry) dominate, with strawberries, soft smooth tannins and a nice long velvety touch full of spices at the end. It is vividly fruity with classic Musar spice and persistence. “Plum, cake and jammy fruit cake aromas. Clean nose, very juicy though. It reminds me of a rich breakfast confiture, full of blackberry flavor, clean finish. Very good indeed, I like it.”

La Stoppa Malvasia Dolce Frizzante 2009 $15.99
La Stoppa is an ancient estate with vineyards stretching along the Trebbiola valley, not far from the river Trebbia, in the province of Piacenza. Today the company is headed by Elena Pantaleoni, with the assistance of winemaker Giulio Armani. The naturally low yields due to the average age of the vines and poor soil together with the intrinsic quality of the grapes, have made possible the creation of wonderfully characteristic wines, which reflect their vineyards of origin and speak for themselves without the need for excessive reworking in the cellar. The objective is to create modern wines without betraying the history and expression of the territory, manifesting themselves through the subtle tones and unique character of the wines produced. The Dolce Frizzante Malvasia (slightly sweet lightly sparkling) amber in colour and aromatically redolent of peach, pear and sweet apricot, this is, as Randall Grahm might say, “like Gewurztraminer on acid”. Great aperitif or party sipper!

We are constantly bringing in new and exciting wines. These are some the wines we usually keep in our wine room. Have a question or request? Drop us a line.
